Gulf companies told to phase out CFCs

by Lynne Roberts

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has told government agencies and private organisations to phase out ozone-depleting substances including chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs), Arab News reports.

The GCC released unified guidelines in line with international regulations for the protection of the ozone layer. It also renewed its call to adopt measures to contain the use of ozone depleting substances within the timeline set out by the Montreal Protocol.
The new guidelines call for penalties to be imposed on businesses importing or dealing with equipment using ozone-harming substances, and the monitoring of halons used in fire extinguishers. Guidelines also stress the need for the exchange of information and research materials between Gulf countries.

Saudi Arabia’s government has already banned new equipment using CFCs, however there is a need to intensify efforts throughout the Gulf to contain harmful substances, the GCC Secretariat said in a statement.
