by Dylan Bowman

Dubai Aluminium Company (DUBAL) and Mubadala Development Company have agreed a $137.26 million deal with Finland’s Outotec for the construction of two plants to support their aluminium smelter under construction in Abu Dhabi.

Outotec said on Thursday the contract covers the engineering, supply and installation of a new green anode plant including two anode production lines, a crushing plant for spent anodes and ancillary facilities.
The plant is designed for the annual production of 500,000 tonnes of green anodes and the commissioning of the first production line is scheduled for June 2009, the company said.

The new plant will use innovative Regenerative Thermal Oxidization technology for efficient pitch fume treatment, it added.

The $6 billion aluminium smelter is being jointly developed by DUBAL and Mubadala, the investment arm of the Abu Dhabi government, and is to be located at the proposed Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone in Taweelah.

The first phase of the project, which will be operational by 2010, will see an annual capacity of 700,000 tonnes rising to 1.4 million tonnes upon full completion, making it the largest single-site aluminium smelter in the world.
