Balfour Beatty sets up to train site workers

by Rupert Cornford

Dubai-based contractor Dutco Balfour Beatty is planning to launch a training and development centre to boost the skills of its 11,000-strong workforce.

According to general manager, Grahame McCaig, the facility is expected to be finished within the next month.
"We made the decision to kick it off towards the end of last year, and the facility is almost complete now," he said.

"We have brought over a specialist trainer from South Africa, who has got appropriate skills training, and we are just starting to assess the capability of our workers on site, before bringing the best guys off to train them up.

"We will be teaching skills to skilled labour, and, in effect, bringing in a Dutco Balfour Beatty apprenticeship scheme," he added.

The training school, which will be located in the contractor's asphalt yard at Jebel Ali, will focus on masonry work, carpentry work, steel-fixing work and scaffolding, with the potential to expand into other areas.

"We are going to start moving into driver training and operator training as well," said McCaig.
