by Reuters

Australian construction firm Leighton Holdings said today it was selected to build a highway in the UAE at a cost of $550 million.

The project, on which work is likely to start this month, involves building a 6.5 kilometre, 10-lane highway with six bridges in the emirate of Abu Dhabi for completion in September 2009, Leighton said in a statement.
The initial contract is at least its third in the Gulf which it sees as a growth area, it said.

Leighton is building a $407 million equestrian centre in Qatar and an infrastructure project in Dubai, it said.
