KIA unveils $200mn HQ design

by Lynne Roberts

The Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) has awarded design for its new headquarters to KEO International Consultants, based on its plans for an iconic 220 metre tower in the heart of Kuwait City.

According to World Architecture News, the KIA brief demanded a state-of-the-art building, but one that would be functional, flexible and provide a pleasant working environment.
The winning design is based on a tower lifted six floors above ground. Public facilities including an auditorium will be housed in a podium structure which slips through the base of the tower.

Inspiration for the podium structure comes from the traditional form of the dhow, representing Kuwait’s heritage, while the tower represents a soaring future presence.
Principal designer at KEO Raj Patel described the design as reflecting the strength, stability, dynamism and futuristic outlook of the KIA.

Sustainable design elements including wind turbines and photovoltaic panels are also incorporated. Construction is expected to begin by early 2009.

The investment arm of the Kuwait government, KIA is estimated to hold in excess of $200bn of assets, and is one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds.
