The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) was the winner in the Major Project category at the inaugural Emirates Energy Awards in September. Sponsored by the Dubai Quality Group (DQG), the awards honoured individuals and organisations for their contributions to energy conservation in
the region.

"The Emirates Energy Award was launched in a bid to spread awareness about the importance of energy conservation and highlight the best practices in this field," said DQG chairman Marwan Al Sawaleh.
DEWA took the Major Project award for voltage conversion of a distribution network from 6.6 kV to 11 kV, a project designed to improve network efficiency and reliability of power supplies, while Amal Koshak, deputy manager for demand management at DEWA, won the Energy Engineer award for her contribution to electricity and water conservation programmes, which have resulted in the reduction of electricity and water consumption in government departments.

"We are aware that the preservation of our energy resources shall be one of the greatest challenges in our steps for sustainable development," said Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA. "This shall not materialise without the adoption of all society strata to the principles of power conservation as part of its basic values."

Meanwhile, Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) won in the Private Corporation category for implementation of 16 different energy conservation projects, saving 1 857 million kWh of electricity, the equivalent of US $13.2 million.

"As part of an ongoing energy conservation drive, we are continuously on the lookout for opportunities to minimise our overall energy consumption levels, in terms of energy usage per tonne of aluminium produced, as well as to optimise our power generation efficiencies," said Abdulla Kalban, CEO of DUBAL.

Other winners included Avireal Middle East for Education and Research and Saudi Arabia's King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals for its ‘wind energy for remote villages' project.

"The Award has attained a lot of achievements in its first cycle in terms of the scope of participation, as we received applications from as far away as KSA and Iran. We congratulate all institutions and individuals who have achieved real milestones in energy preservation, and we encourage others to follow them," said Dr Abdalla Al Amiri, chairman of the award committee.
