Saadiyat Island contract awarded

Leighton International has won a US $550 million (AED2.1 billion) infrastructure contract for the Saadiyat Island expressway from the Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC).

The contract includes the construction of a 6.5km link road that will connect the Shahama district of Abu Dhabi to Saddiyat Island, traverse the island and connect to the under construction 10-lane Saadiyat Bridge. It also covers the provision of MEP networks, which include a 30km potable water network and a 22.3km sewerage system.
"The mechanical works comprise of a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 10,500m3 per day, of which the bi-product will be used for irrigation; a potable water pumping station; irrigation water pumping station; three stormwater pumping stations; one sewerage pumping station and corresponding piping networks," said Kevin Carvell, M&E Manager, Gulf Leighton. "These networks add up to over 100km of pipe ranging in size from 160-1200mm," he added.

The electrical works will include an 110km 22kV network comprising 15 kiosk substations rated at 1000kVA 22kV/400V and complete with fibre optic cables for a distribution monitoring system. A SCADA control system will be installed for the pumping stations.

Saadiyat Island will feature the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi art museum and the Louvre Abu Dhabi universal museum, plus a number of five-star resorts. The project will be developed in three phases and is due to complete in 2018. Construction of the Saadiyat Link was due to start in September, with completion due in September 2009.
