Nakheel in sustainability drive

Dubai property giant Nakheel on Tuesday pledged to make its developments more environmentally friendly following a sustainability review of the company’s operation and projects.

Nakheel said it would put more focus on developing sustainable communities, looking at areas such as energy efficiency, waste management and the provision of open space.
The developer said it would also set up new minimum standards in a number of areas such as business integrity environment, health and safety, and human rights.

Part of this includes developing improved worker accommodation. Nakheel said it is currently building housing for 60,000 workers with upgraded facilities such as dining halls, retail space and recreational facilities such as gyms, sports fields and a library.

As well as this, Nakheel pledged to boost ties with organisation like the Emirates Green Building Council and the United Nations University, through which it is setting up monitoring programme for the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Nakheel’s projects include the three palm islands, the archipelago in the shape of a map of the world, and the extensive beachfront development Dubai Waterfront.

“In the past year Nakheel has recognised the need to improve business protocols, practices and policies to create a more sustainable organisation,” Chris O'Donnell, CEO of Nakheel, said at the Cityscape real estate expo.

“Over the past six months, we have conducted a sustainability gap analysis and now we are embarking on an ambitious sustainability agenda. The journey ahead has many steps and is a major challenge, but it is one which we know we must embark on.”

Nakheel has set up a Sustainability Advisory Group to oversee the project. The group also carried out the initial sustainability assessment.
