Leading firms back health and safety drive

Al Naboodah Contracting, Al Habtoor Engineering, Nasa Multiplex, Dutco Balfour Beatty, Al Futtaim Carillion and Murray & Roberts are among the contractors who have signed up to BuildSafeDubai, a new initiative aimed at improving health and safety standards on construction sites.

The group will share best practice, champion worker safety and attempt to dispel some of the time and cost myths associated with keeping workers and sites safe.
"The aim is to help all contractors achieve a basic set of safety standards - particularly with regards to working at height and using the correct building materials, PPE, electrical safety, emergency planning and worker welfare and safety," said Chris Doyle, head of environment, health & safety and sustainability, Bovis Lend Lease.

Doyle estimates that a site accident could cost a project an average of around US $816,877 (AED 3 million) a day if work is stopped.

"The main reason why safety is important is because ethically it is the right thing to do. But business-wise it is also the smart thing to do," he added.

Other companies that have signed up include Sama Contracting, Al Masaood Bergum, Dodsal, EC Harris, Soletenche-Bachy, TAS Middle East, Transgulf, Thompson Cole, Al Fara'a Group, Eurolink Safety, Parsons, Group Five Construction, Mirdif Securities, ETA Consultancy and Al Naboodah Laing O'Rourke.

The group has also attracted interest from the RTA, Emaar, Nakheel and Jafza EHS - Dubai World.
