Sarkozy urges Saudi to curb oil price

by Emmanuel Jarry and Swaha Pattanaik

French president Nicolas Sarkozy said on Monday he was concerned about the sharp rise in oil prices and urged Saudi Arabia to use its influence to play a moderating role.

"When the price of oil triples in four years to recently reach $100 [a barrel], I worry about the suddenness of these rises which directly affect growth and purchasing power, not only in France and Europe but also in a number of poor countries which don't have oil," he said.
Speaking during a meeting of French and Saudi businessmen, Sarkozy said it was in the interests of countries that produced and consumed oil to ensure that rises in oil prices were moderate. (Reuters)
