The G Tower

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer

Philippe Starck's exclusive Middle East project is destined to be a revolutionary design masterpiece, a marvel of both form and function.

What is it?
A 45 storey tower which is set for completion in 2010 being developed in the prestigious City of Arabia district - a 20 million sq ft project that will be the high end urban and retail gateway of the Dubailand mega project.

Who's behind it?

It's being developed by Galadari Investment Office (GIO) who has undertaken the first phase of construction. Architectural icon Alex Vacha and consultants P & T Group have developed a unique stylized exterior with multi-award winning designer Philippe Starck creating customized interiors.

How will it look?

The tower is a structural statement with cantilevered floors and a stylish finish which is said to preclude conventional design.

Interior design company Yoo (which is the result of collaboration between Starck and one of Europe's most innovative developers John Hitchcox) have entered an exclusive partnership and promise a timeless and unmatched interior.

Rashid A.W. Galadari, CEO, says of the project, "The G Tower design concept juxtaposes powerful linear frames with a range of influences. Each element of the project is a work of art with GIO's signature design style evident throughout."

What will it contain?

G Tower will house modern amenities including over 50,000 sq ft of leisure facilities amongst which are a library, billiard room, cigar lounge and hi-tech business centre.

What about the Starck touch - what can we expect?

Philippe Starck's ascent began in earnest in 1982 when he designed the interiors for the private apartments of French President Mitterand. Since then he has been best known as a product designer for the large American retailer Target.

Recent projects include designing an optical mouse for Microsoft and the Virgin Galactic ‘space port' in New Mexico.

His products and furnishings are often stylized, streamlined and organic in their look and are also constructed using unusual combinations of materials - such as glass and stone, plastic and aluminium and plush fabric and chrome.

EH's prediction is that G Tower will attract the same attention as his hotel partnerships (the Jia, Paramount and Delano for example). Expect the unexpected!
