Supertowers to transform Dubai skyline

by Lynne Roberts

Five new supertowers are set to dominate the Dubai skyline as part of projects worth a total of 25 billlion dirhams ($7 billion), it was reported on Sunday.

The towers, each rising over 600 metres with more than 100 floors, have already been approved by the Dubai government and are expected to be completed within five years, project architect Adrian Smith told UAE daily Gulf News.
The projects would cement Dubai’s reputation as a city of supertowers, Smith, who also designed the world’s tallest tower Burj Dubai, told the newspaper.

“Dubai has already become the host to the highest number of supertowers in the world,” he said.

“We are going to add a few more to the city’s growing skyline. Out of the 13 supertowers that are being designed by us, five of them will be located in the UAE and one in Qatar."

According to Smith, a “yet to be announced developer” has already been signed to build the energy efficient structures, currently titled AC Towers, and EP Site 07, 09 and 15.

The buildings will use a new technique to circulate cooler air from the top floors to the lower levels, and will save energy, which could be passed between towers, by 40-60% Smith told Gulf News.

“We can, in fact, design buildings than can create energy for the city,” he said. "Instead of consuming energy, these buildings can actually contribute energy to the city.”

The mixed-use towers will also utilise solar energy and have been designed to withstand the pressures of high winds, Smith said.
