UAE plans 'family-friendly' labour camps
Expatriate labourers may be able to live with their families under new plans revealed by Abu Dhabi’s Higher Corporation for Specialised Economic Zones (HCSEZ) on Wednesday.
The corporation intends to build ‘family-styled’ labour complexes in a bid to provide proper residential units for those with limited incomes, the corporation said in a statement carried by state news agency WAM.
Engineer Khadem Sawayeh Al-Muhairi, executive director for labour services at HCSEZ, said the corporation would construct “world-class complexes at competitive prices” for those on limited incomes.
Forty percent of the labour complexes will be allocated for families, he said.
The move followed concerns over some families residing in labour premises only intended for bachelors, with companies issued with ultimatums to get families out of labour accommodations, he said.
The statement did not dislcose where the camps will be located or when construction would commence.
The UAE is hugely dependent on foreign labourers, the majority of which are Asian construction workers. These labourers are generally housed in overcrowded labour camps, while their wives and children remain in their home country.
Established in June 2004, HCSEZ develops and promotes economic investment through the creation of specialized economic zones.
