Saudi stores seek 35% discount from suppliers
Large food outlets in Saudi have begun negotiating for a 35 percent discount from suppliers prior to Ramadan, when demand for food increases sharply.
Traditionally stores selling food products offer large discounts to encourage larger purchases from customers during Ramadan. However, since Ramadan last year food prices have increased by 15 percent, the Saudi Gazette reported.
Health officials have also warned that the increased sales during Ramadan prompt many store owners to store food improperly as volume of goods they stored is too high. Consumers are urged to pay attention to expiry dates and the condition of the goods they purchase, the paper reported.
According to official estimates SR16billion is spent on food products during Ramadan. With increased supply it is estimated customers will spend SR18billion on food products this year, according to the newspaper.
