Building a network

by James Boley

Developer Nakheel has selected Hyder Consulting Middle East to specify the architectural concept for 44 long-span bridges on Palm Deira.

The bridges will link together 26 of the islands, which will form the largest of the artificial Palm projects in Dubai and will represent the largest reclaimed island project in the world.
Most famous for its infrastructure portfolio, which includes the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Victoria Falls Bridge and the Shanghai water supply project, Hyder Consulting will work alongside LWK Architects to design and deliver the bridges. Nakheel declined to name the other companies involved in the tender or their reason for selecting the infrastructure engineering giant.

Senior personnel at Hyder said the selection by Nakheel provided an opportunity for further involvement in the overall architectural design of the Palm Deira. “Hyder Consulting and LWK Architects will use their combined architectural and engineering expertise to bring out exceptional design solutions for the Palm Deira. We also see in this award a strong potential to be part of the detailed design phase of the project in future,” said Nidal Odeh, regional head of bridges and civil structures at Hyder Consulting Middle East.

The bridges are estimated to take between two and three years to design and build provided the reclamation continues in planned stages. According to Gavin Boyd, director of development on Palm Deira, current reclamation on the Palm stands at approximately 35%.
