Abu Dhabi launches crackdown on illegal construction

by Andy Sambidge

The Abu Dhabi Municipality is starting a campaign to combat unauthorised construction, illegal house conversions and shared bachelor accommodation in the emirate.

The week-long campaign, which begins on Feb. 1, will be implemented in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other organisations.
The campaign comes as part of the Municipality's plan to "counter any breaches" of the city's image such as the letting out of properties to bachelors inside areas predominantly occupied by families, news agency WAM reported.

It follows a similar campaign launched by Dubai Municipality last Oct. since when thousands of violating properties have had power and water disconnected.

Civic leaders in Dubai said the practice of multiple families sharing villas will not be stopped or slowed down in the wake of the economic crisis.
