France's Technip awarded major Iraq contract

A state-owned Iraqi firm has awarded France's Technip the engineering and design contract for a planned 140,000 barrels per day refinery, a magazine reported.

The State Company for Oil Projects (Scop), affiliated to the oil ministry, has selected the French engineering and construction group for the 20 million euros ($25.2 million) deal for the new refinery which will be located in Kerbala, southwest of Baghdad, London-based MEED reported without citing a source.

"Technip says the refinery will have a total capacity of 140,000 bpd and the project will include 18 process units, utilities, offsite facilities, infrastructure and a power plant," MEED said.
The refinery will produce liquid petroleum gas, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel oil, asphalt and fuel oil mainly for the domestic market.

Technip expects to complete the works stipulated by the contract in the first half of 2010.

Iraq will issue tenders for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the refinery once the Technip contract has been completed, MEED added. (Reuters)
