The Eco-Emirate
The Government-backed Developer: Lee Tabler, CEO of TDIC
Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) has always encouraged sustainable development projects that respect the environment. In line with our commitment to promoting sustainability, we were a founder member of the Middle East Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the highly respected international research and education organisation which advocates the responsible use of land and the development of sustainable communities.
Our philosophy is based on delivering best practice across every segment in which we operate - whether it be luxurious desert resorts, nature-based tourism destinations, world class cultural hubs or mixed-use urban redevelopments. Each TDIC project is designed to live up to the company's core values of environmental sustainability, progressive partnerships, cultural stewardship and enhancement and socio-economic viability.
Our company was formed in 2006 and it is a privately operated development arm of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) that aims to help establish Abu Dhabi as a world-class destination for tourists, businesses and residents while creating sustainable growth and employment opportunities. That continues to be our manifesto.
We won't delay any of the projects that are scheduled to come up over the next five years and we are moving forward as planned with ourannounced projects; we will continue to carefully examine projects that have been under discussion but have not been announced as we monitor the markets and move forward with those projects that are sound and will provide long-term benefits to the UAE.
Tourism Development and Investment Company is playing an increasingly important role in the Abu Dhabi government's plans to make the Emirate an international destination of distinction.
We are achieving this through our strategic partnerships with internationally recognised brands, such as the Louvre and Guggenheim museums, and through our responsible development practices. However, TDIC is not only committed to ensuring that Abu Dhabi becomes an attractive international tourism destination and a regional hub for culture, but that the Emirate retains its unique heritage.
One of our flagship developments, Saadiyat Island, for example, captures the essence of Abu Dhabi's growth and development plans. This island sanctuary features seven distinct districts including the Saadiyat Cultural District; these districts will encompass five star hotels, residential property developments, community projects including schools and parks, as well as a professional business hub.
Saadiyat Island's Cultural District provides a strong indication of the direction Abu Dhabi is taking in becoming an international destination for art enthusiasts. Not only will the Cultural District feature the Sheikh Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum, the Louvre Abu Dhabi but a performing arts centre and maritime museum too.
