TRA sets launch deadline for du

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer

The Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRA) has set a February 12 deadline for new UAE telco operator du to launch, according to media reports. The operator was originally supposed to launch by the end of 2006.

“As per their licence, we’ve given them one year to launch their services,” TRA director-general Mohammad Al Ghanem told local newspaper Gulf News.
If du fails to meet the deadline, the TRA said it might take action against the telco and did not exclude the possibility of this involving a fine.

IT Weekly first reported a few weeks ago that the operator looked unlikely to meet its launch date due to technical delays.

Osman Sultan, CEO of du, said he will announce a launch date soon.
