Golfer Lee Westwood has won the inaugural Dubai World Championships and become £1.6m ($2.64m) richer after scooping the biggest jackpot in European Tour history.

The 36-year-old from Worksop in England has regained his position as Europe’s number one after producing a closing 64 – the lowest round of the week.
He won by six from fellow Englishman Ross McGowan.

Ireland’s Rory McIlroy finished third after a 67.

Westwood earned £744,180 for winning the tournament and a further £893,016 from a bonus pool for the top 15 on the inaugural Race to Dubai.

"I'm a bit speechless. I played fantastic at the weekend. I played well at the start of the week, but 66 and 64 will take some catching," said Westwood.

"It's as good as I've ever played, especially under this pressure. It gives me so much confidence and it's definitely the biggest moment of my career."
