Atlantis to recruit 4500 employees

The pre-opening team for the gigantic mixed-use development, Atlantis, The Palm, will soon be undertaking a mammoth recruitment drive in order to ensure the project is fully funcitonal and lives up to guests expectations.

“We’ve promised that we’ll have 51 different spoken languages across 4500 staff, so now we have to actually find multi-lingual staff,” explained Briony Peters, executive director, public relations, for Atlantis, The Palm, speaking to Hotelier.
“Most new hotels are able to just do a mass recruitment drive and fill all the positions they need, but we are going to have to find people who are fluent in two or three different languages or dialects — it’s a huge undertaking.”

Some of the unique elements of the marine-themed resort also offer up unusual human resources challenges. The hotel will feature a number of water attractions, for example, including several marine animal encounter programmes, as well as one of the world’s largest artificial marine habitats, with more than 65,000 native and non-native marine creatures, living in 42 acres of waterscape.

“We will need a fully-qualified marine biologist to look after the aquariums and all the fish and plant life,” Peters added.

Due to open its doors in November 2008, Atlantis, The Palm is a US $1.5 billion joint venture between US resort developer, Kerzner International and Dubai-based Istithmar, and will cover 112 acres on the apex of The Palm, Jumeirah.

The development will include a 1539-room hotel, “inspired by the myth of Atlantis, but incorporating traditional Arabic design”, according to Peters.

The hotel will span two towers, which will be connected by the Bridge Suite. Two Dig Suites will feature live marine exhibits, based on the theme of the resort’s education centre, The Dig, an “archaeological experience” that will offer 18 exhibits.

The development will also include the Entertainment Village, housing 30 F&B outlets, and a water park, the centrepiece of which will be the Ziggurat Temple, featuring seven water slides, one of which will pass through a shark-infested lagoon.

The MICE market will also be catered to at the resort, which will offer 4200m² of function space, a main ballroom, breakout rooms, boardrooms and a majilis.
