The GCC demand for aluminium is set to hit five million tonnes before the end of the decade, it was revealed at the Middle East Aluminium conference held in Dubai last week.

Abdulla Kalban, CEO of Dubai Aluminium (Dubal), said: "The aluminium industry is growing rapidly in the region. Last week, the US $8 billion Emirates Aluminium (Emal) was announced, which is the UAE's second largest smelter and is expected to produce one third of the five million forecasted demand when full capacity is reached in 2013.
"Through this and similar projects we will be able to meet the increasing demand in the region and other countries like China and India, which turned to the GCC for aluminium supply," he added.

Future real estate projects on the drawing board are estimated at US $14 billion in the GCC, and a minimum of $45 billion is currently under construction in Dubai.

Key event speakers also include Michel Jacques, president & CEO, ALCAN - the event's silver sponsor; Tony Kinsman, CEO, Sohar Aluminium; and Truls Gautesen, head, QATALUM.

Leading organisations attending the conference include Abu Dhabi Basic Industries Corporation, Alba, Ma'aden, Arab Bank, Citigroup, Global Investment House, Baker & McKenzie, Mubadala, Mitsubishi Corporation and Siemens AG, plus many other major regional and international industry players.
