Calling all budding Picassos

Budding artists in the UAE will have a dedicated centre of learning in 2012 when a Fine Arts Academy opens alongside the Abu Dhabi Louvre on Saadiyat Island.

The academy will offer training for painters, sculptors and other artists, according to UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdulah bin Zayed Nahyan, who announced the initiative yesterday.
Sheikh Abduallah, who also oversees all media and culture in the UAE, said that art and culture should be more than must something to visit. It has the ability to bring nations together.

He also emphasised the importance of sharing educational skills with France. "Strategic relations between the two countries [UAE and France] are continuously fruitful," he said.

The two countries recently signed an agreement to establish a fully-fledged campus of Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi. The Sorbonne is Paris's most prestigious university, specialising in courses for art, literature, philosophy and languages. It opened its Abu Dhabi campus in October last year.
