Richard Smith up close and personal

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer

MEP: Where are you from?
I was born in Bristol and raised in Devon.

MEP: Who’s in your family?
A wife and daughter.

My wife teaches English as a foreign language; my daughter has just started her A-levels and wants to be a particle physicist!

MEP: What attracted you to the Middle East?
The opportunity to work overseas.

I think it’s one of the great British things to go beyond the seas to help countries and get experience – it was just an ambition really.

I’ve worked in Oman and Dubai.

MEP: What projects are you most proud of working on?
I have to say the Burj Al Arab because it was so ahead of its time.

I’m also quite proud of the Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort in Oman and the Lake Hotel in Dubai is a great project

MEP: How do you like to spend your freetime?
I like walking.

I like the mountains and those with snow on are better – a trip to Switzerand coming up!
