MEP contractors seek local staff

MEP contractors are aiming to raise the number of UAE nationals in their workforce.

Last month's Careers UAE 2007 event, held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, saw some of the major MEP contractors present in a bid to attract local talent.
Commenting on the event, Khaldoun Al Tabari, executive director, Drake and Scull, International said: "We've been supporting the Government's Emiratisation efforts to maximise employment opportunities for UAE nationals and as a result, every year the total strength of Nationals at Drake & Scull has seen a steady increase."

Finding qualified and experienced locals to fit the quotas laid out by Emiratisation is proving difficult for some contractors. "We need our workforce to be at least 2% local," said Rania Hanna, human resources officer Dutco Balfour Beatty Group. "In the last three months we have employed six locals and we are looking to recruit an average of at least two a month.

"It's hard because many locals who do have the relevant qualifications and experience would rather work for the government," added Hanna.

Trans Gulf Electro-Mechanical is another company finding it hard to recruit Emirati staff. "Most of the people we take for our two-year training scheme come from India, because it is so hard to find local staff," said director and managing partner Prakash Khatri.

Careers UAE 2007 was held to enable UAE nationals in all fields to meet directly with recruiters from employers in the region.

Meanwhile, Dubai World Central plans to employ over 600 nationals over the next two years as part of its Emiratisation initiative. This will make it one of the UAE's largest employers of Nationals.
