Qatar 2022 should be moved, says Premier League boss

david

Personally I think Blatter should be investigated, investigated and investigated. That being said, I am sure that Qatar could put on a fine show. However, I really don't understand the concept of holding this event in the summer in the ME, I don't understand how Qatar will cope with the rowdy and boisterous football crowd (let alone the hooligans that tag along) and I don't understand how Qatar will cope with the alcohol excesses given their recent negative attitudes towards alcohol. I also don't think anyone should be anticipating a change to the European calendar and if you DO think it should change then perhaps it is YOU who are being disrespectful. Qatar and FIFA took the bid on a summer schedule and it would be wrong to expect changes to this, unless, of course, that was the intention all along in which case the rest of the world has been hoodwinked and THAT would be even more disrespectful.

Sheikha

So, to sum up. They won the bid for the world cup based on it being held in the summer. Now they want to move it to the winter.
How they won the bid in the first place is beyond me, you cannot have the world cup when its 50 degrees.
Let me predict: before the world cup: Qatar honoured to be hosting the World Cup. After the world cup: Qatar disgusted by behaviour of non muslims....
They want it both ways

Roy Miller

Moving the tournament to the winter won't happen. It would ruin the European leagues who are also the ones that make the most cash (themselves and the players).

Qatar needs to demonstrate the viability of hosting a safe cup. Given them until say 2020 to prove it. If they can't, the U.S. as the second place bidder should be awarded the cup. All of the infrastructure and stadia are in place. There's no need for a 30b boondoggle like Brazil nor the kind of searing heat Qatar will experience.

Given the number of folks who attend World Cups versus the population of Qatar, I don't know how they can physically host that many folks in the first place.

Ian

I lived in the Middle East for a number of years and was so excited when Qatar won this. However, my second reaction was 'it will be a bit hot!' and I wonder how many fans will be ill as a result. Soon after the bids were announced there was all sorts of accusations flying about corruption in FIFA. If FIFA really didn't take into account that it was hot in Qatar in the summer then surely this smacks of incompetence or corruption (or both) on their (FIFA's) part. My sympathies to Qatar for getting even indirectly tarred with FIFA's incompetence. I trust Qatar to put on a fantastic SUMMER event. But ensure the fans know what they are letting themselves in for well before they get there....

I hope, for everyone's sake, the solar cloud project is successful.

I was refering to the UKs preparation and execution of the Olympics as a standard to which Qatar can learn from, follow and exceed if they are to host a Summer World Cup. Being in the construction industry I have first hand knowledge regards how quickly things are moving generally, which is still very slow. As for changing my stance, I hope things get sorted however if not let it play out as it does. It's still a long way away.

Jassim Al Romaihi

The English FA is being arrogant, and is acting out of lack of respect to the est of the world. I think moving a calendar for 4 weeks won't ruin the Premier League that season. If it is a matter of money and T.V. rights, than the FA should point that out.

Qatar is much more than just 1.7 million people. It's an Arab country that is part of an Arab world of more than 400 million and 4000 thousand years of recorded history.

Qatar is also a Muslim county, and part of a Muslim world that add up to 30% of the world's population.

No Muslim nor Arab country has ever hosted the WC. That's why it should be there.

I believe that the English F.A. should rethink their stand, and consider what football and sports really stand for. It's about bringing people together and promoting equal competition, isn't.

The home of modern football should've known better.

Mark Williams

Lack of respect, arrogance! No, it's purely a commercial stance and a valid one. Again the original bid was for Summer. As I have said I hope this goes all the way for Qatar however it has a long way to go.

This is NOT about Muslim countries so why mention it within that context as its a contradiction to your statement of bringing people together.

The World Cup is a global phenomena that has now reached the Middle East.

As you said let it unite and not divide and be strong enough not to think that this has a hidden agenda ref the concerns being voiced, because it does not, the UK is the last place that would promote that underhand approach.

The World Cup is not a 'them & us' event.
Peace up

If it had been held in Australia it would have been a winter World Cup; the official winter months in Australia are June-August according to its own government-sponsored tourist website. So Australia actually bid in the first place proposing to hold a winter world cup. So why should there be such an issue of principle with Qatar now proposing a winter WC as a decent compromise. Does FIFA provide a definition of which months are winter months or stipulates the actual months during which the tournament should be held?

Mark Williams

Australia proposed a Winter World Cup, perhaps that's why they didn't win...... Just a thought !

Asif

The whole idea of awarding Qatar the World Cup was to promote the game more in the region. Let's face it, football is all about money and there is plenty of money in the Gulf region. Enhancing the game of football in this region will be beneficial to FIFA.

I do agree with the comment about Qatar's bid being for a summer world cup and it therefore, should be held in the summer but I don't agree with the comment that the World cup should be taken away from Qatar.

I think what Mr. Williams above and Mr. Scudamore are trying to say is that we should strip Qatar from the 2022 World Cup and give it to England.

I'm sure the World Cup will be held in the Winter as the summer is just too hot here. The people who oppose it will have to eventually accept it as it will happen. This was FIFA's strategy from day one.

Billy

Asif...no one is saying give it to England. Where do you guys get this from? England didn't even bid for 2022. They are saying Qatar first but if a summer tournament is not possible give it to one of the other bidders.

Mark Williams

Where did I say that it should be stripped from Qatar and given to England, please cut and paste that section of my comments.

The award was based on the Summer and NOT the Winter as has already been explained countless times here our domestic leagues and many other countries domestic leagues are played in the Winter. TV rights, sponsorship, advertising, ticket sales....shall I go on!

The World Cup won?t be held in Winter just because Qatar says it will, wake up, this is a game that other countries have been competing in at the highest levels far longer than Qatar therefore their power is absolute as a collective.

Build the air conditioned stadiums that have been promised then I see no issue in this going ahead, if not then it?s all going to get very messy.

This is not about defaming Qatar it is about the sheer enormity of hosting a world cup, organizing and providing not only for the players but for the fans.

Qatar has a long time to sort this and I hope they do

King Kong

We have to realize that big leagues have to be synchronized. That is why Russia had to change the league time from a mild one to the winter in order to synchronize with the rest of the European leagues.

Why this tiny sandy country which is not a football power at all should be a must of holding a World Cup tournament? Promotion of football? Promotion of football to a population with only 1.87 million people in Qatar? Many cities have the population size comparable to the population size of this tiny sandy country.

I remember hearing Morgan Freeman speak on the USA?s behalf at the bidding of the 2022 World Cup.

It was elegant, moving, and contained all the power and persuasion that comes with a classic performance form the treasured actor.

It is a cheat.

Arjun

Why not move the WC itself from Qatar !!!! Now that it has been awarded & Qatar standing it's ground that it would still stage a summer WC so let it be. Don't have to cry now. Qatar has been thinking over this for 2 years now. Their presentation was for a summer WC. If you cant move your leagues then it is your problem, though by my rant nothings gonna change. Everyone knows.....get your act together. Leave it to the Qatari's, every country has a need to grow & definitely Qatar has to grow a lot from here. They will come up with something but please stop this nonsense of moving it. Eventually that is what will happen but leave it to them

Dave

Arjum,

I think you were reasonable in assuming that when Mr Williams wrote "The UK put on an amazing Olympics and and did very well indeed and are now riding high in sport, we prepared and we did it properly, no half measures, fact." he was implying that the match should be switched, particularly when taking into account his inital comment that "it should be moved".

He seems to have changed his position since which shows what comes of a healthy debate.

john Smith

The only way you could satisfactorily cool the players and the fans would be to have sealed air conditioned stadiums, in other words play the competition indoors. Is that what we want?

mark Williams

If this is moved to Winter then sorry it's Qatars problem as this was not agreed to in the bid BY ANYONE. FACT, therefore it cannot be upheld. FACT.

If the stadiums can cool players and then fans then I don't see a problem, however it puzzles me why FIFA are worried about this, it would suggest through talks about Winter that this cant be done.

Prove us all wrong, believe me I don't care where it's held as long as people have a good time and enjoy the football and everything that comes with that.
