Tourism chiefs in Ras Al Khaimah have denied reports that a ski resort is being built in the emirate.

The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAK TDA) refuted media reports that such a tourism resort was being planned.

"While a natural ski resort would certainly be a unique and fabulous attraction, there are no plans for developing one in Ras Al Khaimah at the moment," said Khalid Motik, the authority's director.

Reports suggested the Ras al Khaimah government was set to roll out a multi-million dirham project to create a ski resort atop the Jebel Jais mountain.

Salem Sultan Al Qassimi, chairman of the Department of Civil Aviation of Ras Al Khaimah, was quoted as saying: “It is our ambition to have ski resort in Ras Al Khaimah, yes, but the project is still under study.

“It is a challenging technology to create, but we wouldn’t pursue it if we didn’t believe it wasn’t feasible.”

But Motik added: "Visitors seeking natural beauty and adventure, however, will enjoy their time in Ras Al Khaimah. With stunning mountains, desert expanses, and over 60 kilometeres of white sand beaches, we are able to offer our guests a diverse array of outdoor activities year round."

Ras Al Khaimah surpassed the 1 million visitor mark for the first time in 2012.

To keep pace with demand, the authority has announced plans to open five new hotels in 2013, including the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, the luxury brand's first property in the UAE.

RAK tourism officials said they anticipate welcoming 1.2 million guests to the emirate this year.
