US boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr is the world's highest paid sports star, according to Forbes magazine, raking in a total of US$85m last year.

During the past year, the fighter has competed in just two bouts, defeating Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto and is currently serving a 90-day jail term following a conviction for domestic violence.

Mayweather is by no means the only boxer to make the rich list. In second place comes Filipino Manny Pacquiao, whose earnings touched US$62m, while Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko pocketed US$28m, putting him at 24th best paid.

The list also featured other prominent faces such as golfer Tiger Woods (who had ranked in first place last year), who made US$59.4m; Swiss tennis star Roger Federer with US$52.7m; former England international footballer David Beckham at US$46m; and Formula One legend Michael Schumacher at US$30m.

The Forbes ranking took into account both salaries and prize money, as well as sponsorships and endorsements from third parties.
