Dear Jonathan,
It is indeed impressive to to know top gainers in financials. One doesn't earn riches/wealth to eat it all up. And we all will be gone and soil, doesn't mean we should stop breathing and make a nicer future for the coming generation. Those Achievers, I believe are winners in their lives, to get ahead use what Allah has given (Knowledge) and make best of it. I admire them not just for the wealth, but also for the chance they have taken in life to be in Top list. Can you do it?

Have a nice day

Salam Alikum, I am a Jordanian American, I am interested in setting up International none profit organization that will support Arab Students studying in Europe and USA. Many students drop out of college because of the high cost of living and studying. I need the support of good men and women to help me start this project. Giving Back to the Communities
Posted by nadia on 21 May 2009 at 21:38 UAE time

I assume the richest arabs/muslims do give back to the community. Actually I would go further and say I know they do give back, however, they try to bide by religious teaching, that says you should not tell a soul that you have given to the unfortunate.

Humanterian Aids for the communities
Posted by Saad Al-Huwaidi, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 14 March 2009 at 11:31 UAE time

Although we have so many rich Arabs, yet their participation in the community is very poor in their communities. Everybody knows that they make up their fortune through huge government contracts and therefore they need to consider giving back to the communities. I rarely hear that an Arab billionaire donate endowments to universities or medical centers. I have never heard that they constructed a housing compound to help poor people find a decent housing. Also I have noticed that there are some billionaires representing some of the poor nations in the Arab world like Egypt and Palestine and no one is welling to pledge help his people. Islam has always encouraged us to spend via Saddakat and Zakat, to help others and yet we still have maybe 40% under the poverty line. Who will take care of the widows in Iraq, who will save the children from the streets, who will save young girls from the prostitution boulevards.

Arabs Billionaires, please take a minute of your valuable time and see how your counterparts in the western world are so active in their communities, building schools, hospitals, charges, housing and various plants to help their community live acceptable life.

I have always admired HRH Prince Alwaleed. His personality encompasses all that is required to achieve this status. I have high regards for his belongingness and service to the humanity. I would like to suggest, if I am allowed, that HRH should spend his annual Zakah on building factories, hospitals and schools in different countries for the Muslim community in order to create jobs and this will ultimately bring liveliness to hundreds or thousands of families. May Allah bless The Prince.

first of all congrats to all the rich 50 in the list.getting wealth means more responsibility towards your people and your surroundings.it is the balance which is still made and which will be there that only 20% people will have all the wealth for the rest 80%. so its your responsibility to see that these 80% are well taken care of.

The Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation that manages HRH’s charity and philanthropy nationally, regionally, and on a global scale..... the most important part of the listing. Here is a man who not only earns big money, but gives back to the community. If only everyone shared the wealth we would not have such tragedy in the world.
Where is it all going?
Posted by Qais Al-Ismaili, Muscat, Oman on 16 January 2009 at 18:43 UAE time

First of all its a great thing to have money, and its also good to live in luxury, but dont go overboard with it, money should be spent wisely and not on useless things like Nice plate numbers( cant remember who it was, but i read about some guy that spent 14.5 million on a plate number)
People are Amazing
Posted by Wissam Younane, Dubai, UAE on 14 January 2009 at 15:43 UAE time

It's funny most of you people become beggers whenever you see someone with money. If you needed money, you wouldn't be sitting in front of a Screen, checking a list of Millionaires, and saying nonsense uhhh give zakaaaat i don't know what! you will be working hard towards your goals instead of moaning!!! in order to type it means you do have a certain kind of education, therefore go and use it. Work hard, seek opportunities, and when your hard work crosses those opportunities, this is when you will start making money, not by sitting here and complaining because someone else, worked harder whether it's him or his ancestors, and therefore is rich today!

Give zakat, build mosques, hospitals, schools for the poor people worldwide. Remember, one day you will die and you can't bring your wealth with you. Only your right belief (firm faith in Allah, Islam and Prophet Muhammad or sincere belief according to the Qur'an and the Sunnah) and your good deeds will benefit you.

Wealthiest Arabs
Posted by Rinaldi Suharto, Jakarta, Indonesia on 23 December 2008 at 16:57 UAE time

Hello the next Richest Ladies & Gentlemen,

I think a more comprehensive and detailed study on the Arab Wealths and their Wealth Managements should be made not only to find out the List of the Wealthiest Arabs, but also to know how they manage their huge wealth to maintain and even make them grow bigger and bigger.
Someday, it might be a model of the Advanced Wealth Management in the future which, certainly, would be very useful for you when you become the next Richest. Do not laugh, please...
Further, the study could also include the percentage of the wealth that goes to the poor or allocated for charity or humanitarian aids.

Posted by msj, beirut, lebanon on 18 December 2008 at 08:19 UAE time

First i didn't get why the Hariri three brothers were entered separately on the list and not as a family like all the other families on the list, because they would have been ranked higher than what it is showing.
Second, to the person from San Francisco who was commenting "which of them contributed to charity and other...", which is an expected comment coming from a person living in his area where knowledge is limited about people from outside there borders. Most of who are on this list, have done a lot to their countries and other countries. Dear sir, maybe if u try to read about only one person "Rafik Al Hariri" you will have an idea about one great person what he did during his life for his and world wide countries. And regarding most of the Saudi people on the list, u would be amaaaaaazed what they do to their country and other countries, the UAE people to ..and i m talking out of knowledge, because I have been living around the Gulf too since 20years....Please try to widen yr knowledge before comment in this way about people you have no knowledge of obviously...no offence...Thank you.

I really appreciate the efforts of the Arabian Business in publishing this information. I haven't seen this in any other Arabian Magazine.
This is a very time consuming work and it takes very big effort to produce such report. In regards to not mentioning Qatar or other high net worth individuals, I believe that there are people out there who would like to keep their information very personal and confidential.
Very good job, well done. Looking for future releases...
Arab billionaires

I agree with Craig of San Francisco and Eve St Charles of the US.

One thing is certain the people are billionaires!

What I wanted to know is do they really helped impoverished society of the world?

Come to think of it, when they die, they die alone and they will not be able to bring their billions to the grave. So now that they are living, why don’t they use their billions for the good? I am sure their God will love them.

How can you miss Al Naboodah & Al Habtoor Groups other business houses in Dubai, Abudhabi and Sharjah whose networths are over a billion individually. I think they need to work on the list again as there are many billioners left out of the list. How come there is no one from Oman and Qatar, aren't there any billioners in those two countries?

No declaration
Posted by Sameh - Egypt on 16 December 2008 at 14:02 UAE time

Most of the wealth in the Arab world is not declared to media . For example , wealth of the royal families of the Gulf region ( Saudi Arabia , Kuwait , etc ) with exception of Al Walid Bin Talal

Also , you forgot billionaires in Egypt : Sawiris ( 10 Billion $ ) - president of Orascom Telecom . He made his wealth from telecom industry and constructions .

Also , Ahmed Ezz , around 5 bln $ , he's the leader of steel industry in Egypt .

Mohamed Farid Khamis , owner of the 2 nd largest carpets company in the world . He's Egyptian , too .

I can notice that most of billionaires from Egypt made their fortunes through production and industry . Not speculations and oil like in the gulf area .
Sawiris
Posted by Matt, Cairo, Egypt on 16 December 2008 at 14:00 UAE time

How is the sawiris family the 23rd with 3.3 billion dollars?.. please check forbes, as on forbes as a family, if you add all of them together they will make up to 35 billion dollars, and that was last years, still did not get updated, where the family even got richer in the past year, so based on what the family here is worth 3.3 billion. i guess this is not accurate at all.

there is an expression that unique people talk about big ideas, big people talk about big acts, and ordinary normal people talk about the big people!! what is the benefit to count other poeples' money. the fact is you should promote the success quality wise not the quantity of the money people have. people like to know where and how these wealth came from and where is heading and driving what. the story of success can benefit the others but numbers, luxury items, celebrity life style... who cares. nothing promise the happiness but true understanding of life. and what matters other than happiness?

WHY BASH THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE RICH?
Posted by Craig, San Francisco, USA on 16 December 2008 at 08:50 UAE time

Rich is a good thing. Ask anyone who has been poor. Bashing them for having money is childish.

My question is "Which of them have contributed to charities, schools, youth and family agencies etc.? Which of them have done so OUTSIDE of the Middle East and without any regards to race, religion or culture? Which of them have opened schools in impoverished areas or helped clean up an environment or an eco-system? Who is active within the Middle East at organizing others in both their region and their sphere of influence (rich) to form a global community to do more of these things?

THAT would be a real list of leaders who had demonstrated they are both rich and enlightened and THAT would be the people to to watch, to follow and to learn from as we proceed into the coming years and decades.

Just my two cents.
FYI- It's very disrespectful to assume every Arab family doesn't work hard to achieve Finanacial goals!

Don't disrespect people, because you are jealous of what they have, it's wrong to attack someone's integrity..regardless of wealth, culture, or ethnicity! Come out of the dark ages!!!

I totally respect the magazine's efforts in conducting such research which requires massive amounts of effort and time. I just want to note that such a research should not have mistakes in the tiniest details. Just for the record and not for any other reason, Hind Hariri graduated from the Lebanese American University not the American University of Beirut!
How come?
Posted by AbuAnas, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 15 December 2008 at 22:04 UAE time

How comes that Al Waleed Bin Talal has zero change from 2007 while we all know that his main investments are in banking and finance (including the losing Citigroup) which was highly affected by the last economic crisis????

Inaccurate

This list is innacurate: the author seems to have forgotten the crash of a few months back......some billions should be removed, starting from Al Walid....
These lists are really funny..!
Posted by Sam, Paris, France on 15 December 2008 at 18:15 UAE time

I never understood the purpose behind publishing even racing to publish such richest lists. The richest individuals, the richest Americans, the richest Indians, the richest Russians, etc. These lists never even explain business lessons for people to learn from, they are all about wealth figures that ignite detestation and doubts.
I can confirm to you that these lists are not accurate and most richest people are not on it or at least they are i.e. the lists are missing most of them hiding under social, political and economical causes such as fear of envy, corruption, complete secrecy, etc.
Please stop publishing these lists while we see over 100 million people are dying from hunger in the world and if your richest list just pay their Zakat (yearly Islamic obligatory charity) there will be no poverty on the face of earth. Stop please stop.

Missing Members

If you're going to go by family wealth (talking as patriarch and his siblings), the following easily qualify:

1- Al Sager family. (Equities, Real Estate, Automotive)
2- Behbehani family. (Automotive, Real Estate, Equities, Construction)
3- Al Mulla family. ( Automotive, Real Estate, Equities, Construction)
4- Marafi family. (Equities, Real Estate)
5- Ali & Fouad Al Ghanim family. ( Automotive, Real Estate, Equities, Construction, Defense)
6- Al Hassawi ( Equities, Real Estate, Manufacturing)
Others

There are loads of rich Saudis who are not mentiond like Abdullah Al Rushaid,Saleh Al Rashed and some major ones in Dubai like Al Futaim,Al Faheem,Doha the Bin Ali's and Bahrain. Some play low profile compared to the rest. All Royal family members in the gulf have major fortunes as well.
Inaccurate, Incomplete, and totally overestimated for SOME
Posted by Khalid, Kuwait on 15 December 2008 at 14:05 UAE time

Your list, like last year's list, is totally inaccurate and overestimated for some of the members on it, especially those from Kuwait. It is impossible to estimate Soad Al Homaizi's wealth at $3 billion, especially since she has NO investments in listed equities, nor does she disclose her Real Estate holdings, which are the bulk of her wealth. Others, such as Tarek Sultan, are just plain right inaccurate. Mr. Sultan is only the Chairman & CEO of Agility Logistics, a listed major logistics company, and is there by merit, not by ownership and holdings. The entire Sultan family are behind that ownership through many of their subsidiaries and sister companies. Alshaya, one of the major retailers in the region, are again, in no way close to your overestimated figure of $5 billion. They are definitely billionaires if you are talking about M.H.Alshaya, which is the family held retail giant with turnover close to $1.5 billion. Their listed equities holdings are around $500 million. Again, the numbers dont add up. The easiest member on your list to calculate his net worth is the heirs of M.A.Alkharafi, being Nasser, his 3 brothers, 4 sisters, and stepmother. They, as a family in total, account for the figure which you have mentioned, which again is easy to calculate since most of their wealth is in listed equities on the Kuwaiti stock market, and that is public information that is available on KSE's site. As the others have said on here, there are many many other Kuwaiti families (concentrate on FAMILIES) that you have not mentioned here who easily qualify to be on here, but they prefer to keep a low profile. It would be great to see if you could seperate INDIVIDUALS from total FAMILIES, as it does make a huge difference.
50 Richest Arabs
Posted by Shawki, Kuwait, Kuwait on 15 December 2008 at 14:05 UAE time

Again, it is not a conclusive nor accurate list. Families like Al-Ghanim, Al-Hamad, Al-Humaidhi, Al-Sager, Behbehani,Maarafi, and Al-Othman were not included.
Also, the list did not include members of the royal families of the GCC countries. I am sure that their wealth is by far greater than the ones published.

Individual and Family

One thing I would like to ask why there is comparison of Family with Individuals in the list?? If there are more than 10 stake holders in 1 family then they might not even make the list of top 50??
How did they earn their wealth?

Good effort to come up with such a list. But there is obvisously some seriously rish Saudi familities not included. Al-Juffali for example, the Mercedes dealers in the kingdom for the past 50 years are huge. Also Al-Naghi family, the BMW/LG/RollsRoyce dealers giants!.
SO WHAT?
Posted by MOHAMMED KALEEMULLAH, DUBAI, U.A.E. on 15 December 2008 at 11:16 UAE time

What gives? If they are rich, it is for themselves, making more and more money, swallowing small businessess, coercions, influence etc. An ugly side of capitalism, making the distance more between the have and have-nots.
In correct figures
Posted by arshad, Dubai, UAE on 15 December 2008 at 09:06 UAE time

The figures do not match the Forbes 2008 list.
For Example: Majid Al Futtaim on Forbes 2008 is ( $3.0 Billion)
and yours show the same perosn ($ 4.3 Billion)
A huge gap of 3.3 Billion
Re: Incomplete and Inaccurate

The "Al Homaizi" family is represented by Suad Al Humaidhi in at number 26. I think that as per the guidelines used by Forbes magazine, the list here is based primarily on the value known public holdings or assets which have been publicly evaluated (eg. land through registry offices or a recent sale/purchase
Incomplete & Inaccurate

Incomplete and inaccurate just like last year....where are the Al Habtoor & Al Naboodah families from the UAE, the Al Hassawi & Al Homeizi families from Kuwait and the Al Naghi and Al Hokair families from Saudi Arabia?

Am sure that there are many wealthier Arabs not revealing their wealth

The question is what are they going to do with that wealth?
apart from leaving most of it to their inheritors

Intersting to know how did they do thier first million, before asking about the billions

Your info is not correct, 28# on the list Abdullah Al Rajhi is not the CEO of Alrajhi Bank, he is a brother to Sulaiman and a founder in Alrajhi Bank and he is about 85 years old, while the CEO of the bank Abdullah Al Rajhi is the son of Sulaiman the chairman of the Bank.
