Dubai Transport Authority has launched the first of four new bus routes that will cover several areas of Dubai, the chief executive officer of the Road Transport Authority said.

The new bus routes are part of the RTA’s plan to expand and upgrade the public transport network in Dubai. The plan aims to encourage all segments of the community to use mass transit systems.

According to the RTA, an increase in public transport use will help free the flow of traffic movement and allow authorities to cope with the urban expansion and demographic growth of the emirate.

Eisa Abdul Rahman Al Dosari, CEO of the RTA, said: “Increasing public transport ridership will minimise traffic congestion, limit crashes, boost traffic safety and considerably cut pollution rates, which result from excessive use of private vehicles.”

He added that increasing bus routes are the foundation of the RTA’s plans to increase journeys made by the public transport network.

Al Dosari said that the four new routes would cover a wide area of Dubai, and that there would be sufficient amounts of buses in operation to ensure that customers would have to wait no more than 20 minutes for a bus.

These improvements come on the back of performance incentives offered to bus drivers, which promises them better homes as a reward for improvements to customer service and driver performance. Drivers will also be provided with information and training as part of these performance incentives.

The four new routes are: Route 22 from Deira Bus Station to Al Nahdah 1, Route 47 from Rashidiya to Jumeriah Beach Park, Route 54 from the Gold Souk to International City and Route 88, which leaves from Deira City Centre to Dubai Media City.

Please note that due to recent downturn in Dubai many people have found jobs in Abu Dhabi and moved to Gardens, Discovery Gardens, JLT and Marina and are commuting in thousands daily from Jebel Ali to Abu Dhabi only daily basis. I strongly suggest that RTA setup a bus station in Jebel Ali not only for Jebel Ali Abu Dhabi but also for all route within Dubai to Jebel Ali. Comments invited from Mind Like Folks.
