Adnan Amin, formerly acting interim director general, was elected director general of IRENA for a four-year term

The UAE was confirmed Monday as the permanent headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in the body’s first session in Abu Dhabi.

Around 800 delegates from 150 nations gathered in the UAE capital to attend the meeting, which marks the first time a major international organisation has been based in an Arab country.

Adnan Amin, formerly acting interim director general, was elected director general for a four-year term.

“The UAE is honored to be the permanent home of IRENA and will continue to be a strong advocate for further global collaboration and the deployment of renewable energy,” said Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE’s special envoy for energy and climate change.

So far, 148 countries have ratified the IRENA statutes, which are dedicated to expanding the use of green energies globally.

The UAE has put climate change high on its national agenda, via the construction of Masdar, earmarked to be the world’s first carbon-neutral city.

Abu Dhabi also hosts the World Future Energy Summit and awards the annual Zayed Future Energy Prize.

A single $22B (with budget half gone) initiative with only a few hundred employees an industry does not make. "800 delegates from 150 nations gathered in the UAE capital" -- wonder if offsets were bought for the event??
