Simon Clegg departs Expo 2020 Dubai

Tony Aitkenhead has stepped up to acting COO while permanent replacement is sought

Simon Clegg has left his position as COO of Expo 2020 Dubai, Arabian Business has learned.

Clegg was appointed to Expo last year to help drive plans for the six-month mega-event starting in October 2020.

It is understood that he departed within the last month to return to the UK for personal reasons.

Tony Aitkenhead, who works in the Expo 2020 Dubai real estate team, has stepped up to acting COO while a permanent replacement for Clegg is sought.

Clegg is a former CEO and elected board member of the British Olympic Association and has worked on other major global events including as COO of the 2015 Baku European Games Operation Committee.

He managed the British team at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and led the campaign to persuade the UK government and mayor of London to bid to host the 2012 Olympics in London.

He is also a past CEO of Ipswich Town Football Club, according to his LinkedIn profile.
