Around 5.7 million residency and visit visa applications were processed in Dubai through a new online service system, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) announced on Saturday.

The released figures show that a number of large companies in Dubai are using the online service to apply for residency visas for their employees, reducing customer visits to GDRFA-service centres, officials said.

Major-General Mohammad Ahmad Al Marri, director-general of GDRFA-Dubai, said the decision to switch to an electronic platform was part of the directorate’s efforts to bring their services online for heightened customer convenience.

Up until August this year, 5.7 million applications passed through his department  including 1.9 million residency visas and 4.6 million entry permits for company employees, he said.

Al Marri added that the government aspires to reduce the number of visitors to service centres by 80 percent through 2018.

“Big companies in the past needed time and effort to finish their work, like issuing visa permits, and renewing and issuing residency visas for their employees, but with the online service, it has cut time and expenses," said Al Marri.

"They are finishing their transactions at their own office desks without the need to visit GDRFA headquarters or any of its branches.”

Companies are required to register online before using the GDRFA service.
