The British Embassy in Jeddah can now issue emergency travel documents to UK citizens to make a journey if they have misplaced their passport, local media reports on Monday.

The emergency travel document is for available to any British national who needs to travel urgently but has lost their passport. The document is valid for a specific journey within a set amount of time.

"These new documents mean that British citizens who need to return to the UK will always be able to do so even if their passports have been damaged or have gone missing," Nick Heath, a spokesman for the British Embassy told Arab News.

The first person to use the document was Nicholas Malpeli who returned to the UK, the paper reports.
