As someone who has studied whale sharks for the past few years, I worry about the longevity of this amazing creature. Due to the fact that the whale sharks are the largest fish on the planet, and coupled with the fact that they are extremely slow swimmers, this makes them easy targets for fishermen and pin poachers alike. When I went on a tour last summer from Cancun, Mexico, we could literally get right up close to the whale sharks and touch them, if we wanted to. I fear that if more isn't done on an International level to protect these amazing creatures, they can soon join the world's endangered species list, if not become extinct entirely.
