The threat of a government shutdown in the US has worried investors, with stocks falling on Monday, and economists warning that it could shave a percent point off economic growth this year.

The US government is bracing itself for a possible shutdown because Republicans and Democrats in Congress can't agree on a budget to continue its funding. President Barack Obama has been criticised for refusing to negotiate the budget in a bid to push through a health act.
