Government and private sector urged to support facilities for people with special needs

A new ‘IT Skills for All’ initiative has been launched by the ICDL GCC Foundation that offers dedicated IT training facilities for people with special needs in the UAE.

Accredited centres in the country are now equipped with Braille embossed material, screen-readers, hearing devices and specially-designed keyboards. The Foundation is also urging both the government and private sector to support efforts to increase the number of training facilities available for differently-abled individuals.

Use of the facilities will be provided either free or for a minimal charge depending on the entity providing training services.

“Physically challenged individuals are an integral part of our society, and given the opportunity they are fully capable of achieving excellence. That is why we are fully committed to providing equal opportunity to all,” Jamil Ezzo, director general of the ICDL GCC Foundation said.

ICDL GCC Foundation’s efforts have seen 200 blind candidates going through a certification program at the ICDL training and testing centre at General Information Authority in Abu Dhabi. The program is based on a globally recognized standard that sees successful candidates use the computer for internet, email and managing files, as well as using word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation applications.
