Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Company (ADNEC) has announced it expects 1.5 million visitors to attend events at the new exhibition centre in Abu Dhabi - a 50% jump on initial predictions.
The figures show ADNEC will drive growth in the United Arab Emirates exhibition industry by 33%, an increase of 8% on previous predictions.
More than 60 major exhibitions and conferences are already scheduled for next year.
ADNEC chief executive Simon Horgan said the international exhibition industry had been quick to embrace the centre since it opened in February this year.
"Our initial plan was to attract one million visitors by 2009 and this would have been a triumph for a brand new exhibition centre," he said.
"To now be expecting 1.5 million in 2008 is an astonishing achievement, which catapults ADNEC into the world's premier league of exhibition and conference venues."
Construction work will soon begin on Phase 2 of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre - expected to be complete by October next year - and the surrounding Capital Centre development,. The AED 580 million (US $158 million) second phase will see the exhibition space double, with interconnecting floor space totalling more than 55,000 square metres. For all the latest travel news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
