There can be few more deserving names than that of Sarah Shuhail on this list. The Emirati national opened the Ewa’a Shelter for Women and Children in 2008 after retiring from her position at a girls school. The charity provides temporary shelter for up to 30 women and child victims of human trafficking in the UAE, and funds psychological, medical and legal assistance - as well as help with rehabilitation. Since the opening of the first branch in Abu Dhabi, two more have followed, in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah. Women who are staying at the shelter are not obliged to give information to the police. Generally between the ages of 20 and 30, and from a range of backgrounds, all residents are given mandatory check-ups, plus counselling, when they arrive. The charity has benefited from a $270,000 donation from Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the widow of HH Sheikh Zayed.
