Industry: Culture and Society
Company: Supreme Council for Women
Designation: Secretary General
As secretary general of the main organisation for women’s rights in Bahrain, the Supreme Council For Women, Lulwa Al Awadhi is a powerful Bahrani women’s advocate. She utilises her role to campaign for the local parliament to introduce personal status law to protect womens rights in divorce and inheritance. Her profound work has, however led to strong disagreements with those who strongly oppose Al Awadhi’s views.
But then again, Al Awadhi is no stranger to opposition. In the 1970s, she became one of the first two female practising lawyers in Bahrain. Her counterpart, Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa subsequently went on to become the president of the United National General Assembly. She also holds rank of ‘honorary cabinet minister’ — a title awarded in 2002.
