The daughter of Dr Umar Al Zawawi, a top adviser to Sultan Qaboos and the second wealthiest man in Oman next to the monarch, Al Zawawi was the chairwoman of Oman International Bank (OIB) and first female to lead an Omani corporation. She has been closely scrutinised by the sultanate’s banking community since she was promoted to this post in 2002. She has been on OIB’s board since 1996, but resigned last year.
Founded by her father, OIB was established in 1984 as the first 100% Omani-owned commercial bank. Al Zawawi has won numerous awards for her leadership of the bank, including the Arab Women Award 2006. Her father, a Harvard-educated doctor, is the Sultan’s adviser for foreign liaison. He is president of Omani Omzest Group, which represents German car group Daimler, among others.
