Few projects will be as important to the future look of Qatar’s capital city as the $5.5bn Downtown Doha scheme – the 4310,0002 project aiming to be the world’s first widespread sustainable regeneration of a city’s downtown area.
The multi-phase project has been on site since June 2009. Phase 1 has included the creation of a Diwan Amiri Quarter with a Diwan Annex, Amiri Guard and a national archive, as well as a mosque, heritage buildings and infrastructure works. Main contract works were split into three packages, delivered respectively by Hyundai/HBK (1A), Carillion-Qatar Building Co (1B) and Brookfield Multiplex/Medgulf (1C).
It was initially due to complete in December, but in May CEO Abdullah Hassan Al Mehshadi said that it will open within the next two months, stating that the “complex” project needed careful commissioning work.
