Designation: Middle East managing director
The past year has seen managing director Tom Bower help to grow the Middle East arm of WSP Group by more than 30%.
Bower says the company has positioned itself as “a first-choice technical services provider.”
“It was essential for our business to recognise which sectors it was strong in, grow these and utilise these skills to penetrate other sectors,” he observes.
“We still pride ourselves on being leaders in the retail, hospitality and infrastructure markets, but our teams have been able to diversify, and at a fast pace delivering projects as diverse as the Doha Handball Arena and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park.
“Being part of a 15,000-strong global organisation makes things easier. As the seventh-largest purely technical services consultancy, we have been able to draft in expertise from around the world. It also means that we have a credible in-country resource pool, who are innovative and bring best practice to their projects which has seen our teams being appointed in lead consultancy roles, where traditionally this may not have been the case,” adds Bower.
The company has grown as a result of its $430mn merger with Genivar in 2012. The deal has seen its revenues climb by 60% to around $1.85bn last year, while its net profits were up by 55% to $65.6mn.
