Company: Amana Steel Buildings
Amana Steel Buildings is a Dubai-based contractor that specialises in building industrial property for clients in the logistics, food and manufacturing sectors. Recent examples of its work include the Skycargo terminal for Emirates at Al Maktoum International Airport and a new Emirates Catering facility at Dubai International Airport.
The company was born out of Zamil Steel to carry out building for firms that had placed steel orders. However, it was spun out in 1983 and is now a major contractor in its own right, employing over 13,000 people in seven different countries.
This year, it has won new orders from Qapco to build materials warehouses in the Mesaieed Industrial City area and from Al Ain Farms for a national dairy production facility set to open next year.
However, chief operating officer Riad Bsaibes is most excited by a modular building system created in the US, which he says is perfect for use in remote locations.
Buildings are designed and prefabricated in factories, with staircases, MEP services and furniture bolted in to modules, which are transported to sites in boxes, plugged into services and opened. These can then be added to or even moved without any damage to the individual units.
This allows developers to build small hotels, schools, or hospitals in remote locations and then either bolt on extra space if demand requires or move them elsewhere if it doesn’t.
