Company: Al Jaber Group
Fatima Al Jaber is chief operating officer of Al Jaber Group, the family-owned firm with a range of businesses involved in infrastructure, contracting, logistics and industrial businesses.
The group employs more than 40,000 staff and construction still makes up more than half of its revenues. Having suffered severely during the collapse of the construction market in 2009, the Al Jaber Group’s building entities have enjoyed some respite in the last 12 months – most notably, the conclusion of four-year talks in June 2014 about a restructuring of a debt pile worth up to $4.5bn, which chairman Obaid Khalifa Al Jaber Al Marri said was due to its “solid market positioning”.
It has a stake in Dubai-based contractor ALEC as well as separate Abu Dhabi-based building and civil construction arms, a tunnelling firm and an oil & gas specialist. Its Qatar construction arm, launched in 2002, has 2,800 employees and has worked on projects such as The Pearl-Qatar.
Last July, Al Jaber Building secured a contract worth $480mn to build the Saadiyat Point, a project containing 462 villas and two shopping centres.
