Abu Dhabi’s removal of the 20kph buffer on speed limits took effect yesterday, amid confusion that many of the new speed limit signs remained covered.

Before August 12th, a driver was able to travel at 140kph in a 120kph zone and at 120kph in a 100kph zone without incurring a fine. In most cases it seems the new speed limits are 20kph higher than before – but with zero tolerance for breaking the limit.

However, most signs displaying the new limits remained covered leading to uncertainty about permitted speeds.

The Department of Transport and the Urban Planning Department of the Abu Dhabi Police had stated in July that the decision to remove the buffer would prevent confusion and improve road safety.
