People in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain dream of being a poet more than any other profession, according to data compiled by financial services provider Remitly.
Data analysts at Remitly crunched 12 months of search data to calculate what were the most searched for jobs in each country of the world.
The results show the fascinating variations in career aspirations around the world.
While pilot was the number one option around the world, a much more lyrical pursuit was favoured in the Middle East.
According the data “poet” was the most looked for profession across the GCC.
Remitly calculated the dream career data by compiling Google search data (searching all languages) to establish the annual search volume, between October 2021 and October 2022 in each country for “how to be a [job]” search terms associated with dreaming of a new job or career for every country in the world.
The most searched for job was then used as the top career for the specific country.
There are currently no “Poet” jobs listed on leading job sites in the region.
Pilot took the number one spot on a global scale, with just under a million searches for the term “How to be a pilot”.
Remitly says it was the number one option in countries such as the US, UK and Australia.
Writer had fewer searches, at 801,200, but topped the charts in 75 countries, including India, Algeria and South Africa.
Other notable dream jobs include dancer, YouTuber and social media influencer.

In a statement accompanying the report, Remitly said: “Not so long ago, a ‘career for life’ used to be an accepted wisdom. You studied the things that interested you and, when you finished your education, you picked an industry, found a job and stayed put until retirement.
“That concept has, over the years, become a thing of the past with many not happy to ‘settle’ when it comes to their choice of career.
“Real wage growth has also stagnated and changing jobs or career can be an excellent way to grow your income potential, not to mention the fact that migration continues to increase as more people move to new countries for better wages with the aim of sending more money back home to their families.”
