|~||~||~|Over the last decade, Windows Middle East magazine (known before January 2002 as Windows User) has brought consumer and small business IT news, reviews and advice to you, the region’s PC users, each and every month. And it’s certainly not been a dull few years…
As the Technology Timeline in our forthcoming issue shows, this time has been packed full of technological improvements, ingenious innovations and – at times –hype for hype’s sake.
From a mobile technology standpoint, Intel’s Centrino suite of technologies has arguably made the biggest impact on the consumer market (in that the vast majority of notebooks purchased in this region are now Centrino branded).
In the desktop world, the addition of advanced graphics port (AGP) technology to mainboards gave home users the chance to really ramp up their systems’ graphics capabilities, and once prices come down a little more then PCI Express should do more of the same for mass market consumers.
In gadget terms meanwhile it’s difficult to dispute the iPod’s influence, as it effectively kickstarted a whole product segment and is still the MP3 player to beat.
The year in which the most nonsense was spouted was undoubtedly 1999, when doomsayers around the world warned that – come the turn of the new century – all our PCs would pack up en masse and we’d all return to the dark ages. Did it happen? Did it heck, although according to an unnamed Microsoft exec a champagne cork did nearly have someone’s eye out…
Now then, what does the next decade hold for the world of IT? I have my own predictions – such as Windows Middle East doing a Microsoft and trampling all over its competition, and the podcast I’m working on being a smash hit – but really I’d prefer to hear your thoughts.
