Oasis re-build to begin soon?

Reconstruction of shopping centre expected to start by the end of month but contractor has not been named

A Landmark Group spokesperson has said that a US $109 million (AED400 million) contract to re-build the Oasis Center has not yet been awarded, despite claims by the company that construction is expected to start at the end of this month.

“The Arch group has been appointed as the architect and consultant, but no contractor has been appointed as yet and I can’t say when this will happen,” said Raju Nair, a marketing representative at the company.

The Oasis Center was gutted in a blaze last September. The reasons for the fire are still not clear.

“There is no denying the fact that the fire and the damage it caused has been a setback for the group,” said Micky Jagtiani, chairman and CEO of the Landmark Group.

“But we are a financially and operationally robust organisation and I personally consider such instances a part of life — you win some, and lose some.”

The new development will be constructed at the same location on Sheikh Zayed Road and will take about 18 to 24 months to complete.

“The new mall will continue to be called the Oasis Center and will have four levels of retail space, totalling approximately 55 742 m2, explained Vipin Sethi, group finance director, Landmark Group.

“There will also be one level of office space of approximately 18 580 m2, totalling 74 322 m2 in all. For the convenience of customers three basement car parks with a capacity for 1600 cars have been planned.

“To give you a comparison, the new mall will have almost three times the retail space of the old Oasis Center,” he said.

The main tenants at the mall will include home furnishers Home Centre with a retail space of about 11 148 m2, family store Centrepoint spread over 92 909 m2, electronic store E Max which will cover an area of 7432 m2, Fun City and a food court.
