Russian contractor Stroitransgaz has taken two contracts together worth around US $370 million from state-owned Syrian Gas Company to build a new refinery and pipeline in the region.

The first contract covers construction of the gas processing plant near the town of Palmrya.

The second contract involves the construction of a 324-km pipeline that will run along the Jordanian-Syrian border to ar-Rayan, 160 km north of Damascus.

An international tender for the project went out in the spring and both projects are expected to be completed within two years.

Stroitransgaz is the main contractor to Russia’s natural gas monopoly Gazprom.
